The LM317 Voltage regulator is one of the few "ever surviving" components as f.e. 1N4148, 741, 2N3055, 555, etc.
Having some of these you can always supply your electronics the correct and stable voltage.
Since it is a so called floating device (not connected to ground) you could use it for high voltage regulation as well, so it is NOT only capable of regulating up to 40V as so many are parroting. Reading the datasheet you will find out that the differential voltage over this IC is not to be exceeded over 40V, which is someting else!
With only one resistor change (or potmeter) you could regulate about any voltage as long as the voltage over this LM317 does not exceed 40 Volts. It needs a differential (= Vin - Vout) voltage of 5V minimal to work perfect.
Example:  You want to regulate a 55V supply. Than Vin could be 60-95 Volts with R2= 10k, see table below. R1 is always 240R.
We also finally found a source for its complimentary negative voltage type, called LM337, which is working similar.
Both types we have in TO220 and D2T936 casings. LM317 also in SOT23.
